Palaio Ligourio

Palaio Ligourio

LOCATION: Argolid

Palaio Ligourio

  • Position

The exact location of this settlement is not known. Some scholars have placed it about 4 km north-east of Kranidi: to be precise just north of the Byzantine church of Ag. Ioannis the Theologian, where traces of structures are identified. Other scholars speculate that it was either on Mount Arachnaio, near the ruins of ancient Lessa, or perhaps on the route that connects Ligourio to Nafplio.

  • History

The place is referred in the list of the fiefdoms of the Morea in 1377, as belonging to the Castellany of Corinth. In 1456 the castle of Ligourio was commanded, along with those of Damala and Fanario, by one Iannis Spanioli. In the First Venetian-Turkish war, it fell into the hands of the Turks. According to the Venetian Grimani census of 1700, Ligourio then belonged to the territoriο of Nafplio, but in 1715 it again passed back into Ottoman hands.
