Phokas

  • Position

    These are set on Mount Phokas, which separates the plains of Kleonai, Nemea and Vocha; it dominates the plains of Vocha and Nemea both.

    It had visual contact with a dense network of castles and so could control a vast area that stretched across much of Corinthia, and also the Corinthian Gulf.

  • History

    The mountain of Fokas got its name from the great Byzantine family of the same name. In medieval times a settlement developed on top of the mountain.

  • Description

    Οnly ruins of the wall and the settlement are preserved οf the castle . On the southern rocky side, where is the monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, there remains a hermitage.

  • The castle today
