Trikala Fortress, Corinthia

  • Position

The fort is located at an altitude of 800 m, at "Palaiokastro" between Ano and Mesaio Trikala. It is built on a plateau beneath a rocky eminence. The area north of the fort is crossed by the river Tholopotami, and to the south by the spring that stems from Ano Trikala.

  • History

Trikala in Corinthia, whose name probably has a Slavic origin, consists of three districts (Ano, Mesaia and Kato Trikala). From this settlement, which experienced particular growth throughout the post-Byzantine period, is descended the famous historical family of the Notaraioi.

Specific information about the fortress of Trikala has not survived. However, it is noted in the lists of castles for the years 1450 (Trechale), 1467 (Tricalia) and 1469 (Teichala), while during the Venetian census of Grimani in 1700, the settlement was mentioned as Tricalla belonging to the territorio of Corinth.

  • Description

The fort encloses an area of about 1,200 m2. The east side remained unfortified due to the cliffs, on the south side only the foundations of the fortifications are preserved , while the north section of the castle stands to a low level. Westwards a rocky prominence is formed. There are few remains left of the fortress,  among which  the ruins of the tower and dry-stone walls can be included. In the construction of the tower, ancient stones have been used at the corners of the walls and elsewhere in the rest of the fortifications.
